I know that I’ve been talking about breakfast a lot lately, but I think it truly is an important way to start the day. At least for me.
One of my favorite quick and hearty breakfasts (besides the savory chickpea pancakes) is grits. Well, to be honest, sometimes it’s stone-ground grits and sometimes it’s Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal from Bob’s Red Mill, and sometimes Quinoa Rice & Shine hot cereal from Arrowhead Mills. Polenta works well too. All of them make a delicious, warm, filling (and nutritious) way to start the day.
Although I used to like my hot cereal sweet, I am now a savory girl all the way. I cook the hot cereals with water (according to the directions on the package), and then at the end I stir in enough non-dairy milk to make it nice and creamy (and with a little extra protein kick too). Then I add some salt (or Penzey’s garlic salt which is the bomb!) and lots of fresh ground pepper, nutritional yeast flakes, sliced scallions and sometimes steamed greens, chopped steamed broccoli or sautéed mushrooms. It is so delicious! Seriously, this is what I love to eat on a cold, chilly morning, or after a morning workout. Then, if you want to take it to another level all together, top it with one of the gravies from Vegan Diner, and you’ve got yourself a breakfast of kings!
I really have been on a breakfast kick. It must be the cold, chilly Fall mornings. Fortunately between my yummy hot cereal and savory chickpea pancakes, I am good to go every morning.

Your Smoky Soy Curls recipe from Vegan Diner atop grits with nutritional yeast and something green (leftover boiled kale or kale chips, spinach, or broccoli) is one of my favorite breakfasts!
Julie Hasson
That sounds so good! I forgot that I do sometimes add greens to this as well. Now I’ll have to try it with the Smoky Curls too. Thanks mamachandra!
Kristina
I love savory hot cereal too, it is rare that I crave a sweet breakfast (although I do love it too…).
I love soy curls, have your Vegan Diner book, MUST look up the smoky curls recipe!! 🙂
Julie Hasson
I’m with you Kristina, and was just drooling over your savory pancakes and tahini sauce. Yum! I guess I like to save my sweet tooth for dessert.
The Smoky Curls are pretty delicious and addicting, and now I’m going to have to try them with grits too.

Oh, is that Vegan Diner book you? We have that one, great book!! Still find Soy curls eluding us as we have to mail order them here in the UK.
I agree, ultimately there is something more satisfying about savoury breakfasts. I came up with more or less the same recipe as you too, just with oats or millet. Usually I add tamari roasted seeds too..

How cool that you have Vegan Diner Adam. Yes, that is my baby. Hopefully Soy Curls will get a European distributor soon. I keep mentioning it to them: )

Can you believe I’ve never had grits?! I need to be grit-de-flowered.
Julie, I was wondering re: my web site if you happened to clear your cache. I really don’t want to change my template again byt I may have to :/
Julie Hasson
Clearing the cache worked Dynise! Thank you for that suggestion. Sorry if I put you through a mini blog nightmare last night; )
Now, if you’ve never eaten grits, you must give them a try soon. Trader Joe’s actually has a fantastic stone ground white grits right now, that I highly recommend. Salt, pepper, some creamy non-dairy milk, nutritional yeast flakes and scallions. Yum!

The bowl thing is in St. Petersburg as well. We even have a fairly new renrautast called Bowled and this is their concept as well. They even have a vegan bowl, which is sauteed seasonal vegetables in a seasoned vegetable broth served over rice noodles. Once of the better options in a non vegan friendly state.

ohgoodgolly yes…Penzey’s garlic salt is one of my faves! Frontier Co-op makes excellent garlic powder and granules too. I almost always have it in the morning on oatmeal or peanut butter toast. I know, weird, but I’ve got an anti-garlic zealot in the house and breakfast is the only time of day when said zealot is sleeping and I can get away with some secret garlic sneaking. 🙂
